![]() Your own family tree consists of those ancestors from whom you descend. Data entered directly becomes part of an international, whole family tree. You will want your own copy of your data. #Rootsmagic and ancestry softwareSo why would you need your own software program on your computer? You can use new FamilySearch without separate software, entering your data directly onto the internet. So genealogists who have all their genealogy data in PAF files will have to convert them directly into FamilySearch or choose a software affiliate for their own computer and personal family tree. A fourth affiliate, Family Insight can move data from FS into PAF, only PAF is not being updated nor supported once the new FamilySearch has been rolled out through the Wasatch Front districts. These software programs interface directly with the new FamilySearch. The new FamilySearch has three early affiliates: Roots Magic, Legacy, and Ancestral Quest. The idea that Roots Magic could import those files without error, was sweet indeed. Some times it took months to re-enter the information that got all jumbled. And we had patrons come in who wanted to convert their old PAF 2.0 files to the latest version. I was Librarian at my local Family History Center. What originally interested me in this program was being told that you could import all your files from PAF without losing the notes or getting them jumbled. While you check the matches against your own database, RM can run lists, combine entries, prepare “to do” lists for ancestors identified and not yet researched. Roots Magic can do more than one thing at the same time. Once you have linked your ancestor to a match on FamilySearch, Roots Magic carries the grunt work on by itself through software. Version 4 is announced for the end of the summer and Team RM have been demonstrating their “easy” interface with the new FamilySearch. And I have been driving to Ogden each Thursday evening since the beginning of May (minus the two weeks I had the flu). “It’s time I learned this program,” I said to myself. Then Roots Magic 3 came out and Bruce Busby donated a copy of this version to my Genealogy Library Center. Linda entered genealogy data into Family Tree Maker which had a direct connect to the internet. And spent my time with The Master Genealogist. One for me and one for Linda.Īs the days and months extended into years, I toyed with the program. A client of mine, who was a beta tester for Roots Magic’s initial launch, told me that this software program was written for genealogists like me–skilled in research with sophisticated knowledge of genealogy sources, but a computer and internet beginner. If the Developers desire to opt to execute or implement a two-way edit feature, then I will embrace their efforts and hopefully continue to use the product.I signed up for an 8-week class on Roots Magic. Therefore, it is appropriate Developers keep edit capability within the desktop software or web-based level only and keep this app as a read only capability. As one ages, who would want to recall or recreate any data that were possibly lost. I recognize a back-up file may save and allow recovery of a significant amount of genealogy data. Due to the complexity of linking family relationships, I envision a far greater possibility of unforeseen software problems in trying to two-way sync desktop to a genealogy app-potentially corrupt data files and/or lose invaluable information that taken years to create or capture. While I generally enjoy desktop software applications that syncs both ways to mobile apps, I find this read-only app should be an exception to the rule. I am a long-time user of the RootsMagic software. #Rootsmagic and ancestry freeNote: Requires RootsMagic desktop family tree software or the free RootsMagic Essentials software to create, edit, or add to your genealogy files. * View media, notes, and sources for people, families, events, and facts * Search ancestors by name or record number * Browse people by surname and given names * Pedigree, Family, Descendant, and Individual Views to quickly explore your family tree * Use the free desktop software to convert other genealogy files including PAF, Family Tree Maker, Legacy Family Tree, and GEDCOM into viewable RootsMagic files. * Keep as many files as you want right on your device * Easily put your family history files on your device through iTunes or DropBox * Uses your actual RootsMagic files- no conversion needed Whether you're a beginner or an experienced professional, RootsMagic is the perfect tool for you!
